Assam: 12 killed, 30 injured as bus collides with truck in Golaghat, PM Modi offers condolences

At least 12 people were killed and 30 others were injured on Wednesday when a bus carrying over 40 passengers collided with a coal-laden truck in Assam’s Golaghat district.

The collision took place at around 4:30 am during the early hours near Dergaon, as the bus, carrying around 45 people, was en route to Upper Assam, The bus was heading from Kamargaon in Golaghat to Tilinga Mandir in Tinsukia district for a picnic and collided with the truck, PTI reported.

Golaghat Superintendent of Police Rajen Singh stated, “As of now, 12 people have been killed in the accident.” He further added that the injured had been taken to a hospital. Investigations are ongoing to gather further details.

According to a senior doctor, serving at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital said that 30 injured individuals were receiving treatment, with some in critical condition, “We are monitoring them,” she said.

A local police station official reported that the truck, travelling in the wrong direction due to highway damage, collided with the bus, which was on the correct path. The incident occurred amidst foggy conditions, and both vehicles were reportedly travelling at high speeds.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the Golaghat, Assam road accident. He stated, “Pained by the loss of lives due to a road mishap in Golaghat, Assam. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest.”

The post also mentioned that a compensation amount worth Rs 2 lakh would be provided to the families of the deceased, and Rs 50,000 to those injured.

“The local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM Narendra Modi,” the PMO tweeted.
