The fuel supply to the country’s petrol pumps, which has been impacted by the truckers’ protest in various parts of the country since last two days, was restored on Wednesday.
Oil minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Wednesday said that inventories (at fuel stations) might have gone low due to the truckers protest the previous day but the OMCs worked out for local solutions to maintain adequate supply.
According to various reports, many parts of the country saw truckers taking over streets and protesting against the new stringent law on hit-and-run cases, which increases the punishment such cases under the new criminal code, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, up to 10 years of jail or Rupees 7 lakh fine if a truck driver flees an accident spot or fails to report the incident to the authorities.
Under the earlier Indian Penal Code, the term for punishment was up to two years. The protest had led to many fuel stations run dry and not receive their daily quota of petrol and diesel. “It happened wherever the supply to dealers came through private logistics,” Bansal said adding that supply has been restored now.
